Review
In the world of GPS, it’s great to find materials that teach how to read physical maps. Yet this book is not completely old fashioned because it contains a few photos of people navigating via a GPS system or phone.
It explains the following concepts:
- Map keys
- Directions: left, right, up, down
- Directions: north, south, east, west
- Basic information about globes such as that they are round, they spin, and the blue indicates water.
These are very important concepts to point out if one has not yet learned these facts. Therefore I feel this is for a very young audience.
No one is going to be navigating a road trip just from reading this book; but it is a brief introduction to the concept of maps and globes.
Parents and teachers can enhance this by having the student make a map of their home, or their classroom. To take it a step further, go to the park and have the student draw a map of the park.
Overall, this is a nice introductory book that will require supplementary lessons and activities in order to really help someone get somewhere with a map.
