This is such an important book.
I love that it incorporated a basic hair care routine and how it can feel burdensome. These types of feelings need to be validated. I love that it gave hairstyle examples and a reference glossary.
I feel like this is a book that is written from the heart that has the intent to help little girls with coily, curly, or kinky hair not feel the pain and hair trauma that many have felt before them.
I don’t like that her hair hit a bully in the face with a ball during gym class. But I understand that this was used for humor or to show some type of empowerment. It’s not unusual to want to see some type of retribution for one’s pain but I just feel like that took away from the beauty of this work. I would have liked for Malashia to focus more on her feelings of personal empowerment as opposed to thanking her hair for hitting someone in the face with a ball.
I feel that children should know that there are always going to be bullies and rude people. We can’t fight them all, but we can empower ourselves by learning assertive communication, how to set boundaries, and how to embody self-love no matter what anyone else is saying or doing.
I appreciate that the end of the book gives Malashia that moment of not needing approval and finding happiness within herself.
Overall, I feel that this book can be very helpful for many families, teachers, and children. But some families might want to have further discussions about energetic qualities and character values.
