This is an informative and compassionate take on what the autism experience can be like. The book begins with a respectful acknowledgment of the debate on terminology to use. The book was originally called All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome.
There are some people that feel that autism and Asperger’s should remain separate; so I appreciate that the author states the intent is to be respectful towards the community.
The pictures are fun, and the text is both relatable and educational. I could see parents using this to help their child validate their feelings about their world experiences. However, it depends on the child. If the child takes things very literally they could be confused about some meanings. For example, the author mentions using their “nine lives” and if someone is not familiar with that expression, the point will be missed. However, on another page, the book mentions that sometimes figurative language can be misunderstood.
I could also see this being given as a gift to family members or friends who may need some education on the traits of autism. I actually think this is the best use for this.
Overall, this is a respectfully warm take on autism that some families may find useful.
