Summary
Disclosure: The publisher provided this book for review via NetGalley.
This book is more about cultural traditions than it is about a boy learning to care for his sick father. The father’s illness is a very minor part of this story which is about a fire walking ceremony and the environment surrounding it.
I feel it would be great book for those who want to celebrate their culture, and great for those who want to learn about a different culture.
If one is not familiar with Tamil, they should know that this book has Tamil words intertwined in the story. Some terms can be figured out using context clues, but others cannot. Fortunately, there is a glossary at the back of the book which defines the terms. One might find it helpful to read that beforehand.
It’s very important to have stories that show we have different customs, but we all share a heart that loves and perseveres. That’s one takeaway from this book.
Some parents, caregivers, or teachers may want to know that there are religious aspects mentioned in this book.
